In An Interview Conducted Before His Attack On Chris Rock, Will Smith Reveals He Had Drug-Induced Hallucination Where He Saw His Career Being Destroyed
Will Smith revealed that had a drug-induced hallucination that saw his career and possessions being stripped away from him, in a seemingly prophetical interview recorded before the actor physically assaulted Chris Rock at the Oscars.
In an episode of David Letterman’s Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, that was recorded prior to attending the Academy Awards, Smith told the television host that he had tried a hallucinogenic drink called ayahuasca.
After detailing he used the drink 14 times over the course of two years he revealed one experience that he described as “the individual most hellish psychological experience of my life.”
Recounting his experience whilst on the aforementioned drug, Smith explained, the effects usually take 45 minutes to kick in. He then said, “And I’m sitting there, and you always feel like, ‘Maybe it won’t kick in this time.'”

“So I’m drinking, I’m sitting there and then, all of a sudden, it’s like, I start seeing all of my money flying away, and my house is flying away, and my career is going away,” he added.
Smith went on, “And I’m trying to, like, grab for my money and my career. My whole life is getting destroyed,” Smith relayed.
When asked if this was his fear in real life, Smith answered, “My fear. And I’m in there and I’m wanting to vomit and all of that. And I hear a voice saying, ‘This is what the f*** it is. This is what the f*** life is.'”
Smith then recounted, “And I hear Willow screaming, ‘Daddy, help me! Daddy! How come you won’t help me?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t see you, baby.’ The shaman is like, ‘Relax, relax, relax.'”
“And she tells me, ‘Sit up.’ She tells me, ‘Sit up.’ Then slowly, I stopped caring about money. I just wanted to get to Willow. I stopped caring about my house. I stopped caring about my career. And I get to the point where I settled down and the voice is still at 100%. I still hear Willow screaming. My money is still flying away, but I’m going…
At this point he starts taking deep breaths before saying, “And I’m totally calm. even though there’s hell going on in my mind. When I came out of it it I realized that anything that happens in my life, I can handle it. I can handle any person I lose, I can handle anything that goes wrong in my life. I can handle anything in my marriage. I can handle anything that this life has to offer me.”
Following the infamous slap at the Oscars, Will Smith took to social media to issue an apology to Chris Rock, declaring, “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
To a certain degree, the actor’s hallucination has partly come true. Last month reports claimed that both Netflix and Sony are moving on from Will Smith projects after his altercation with Chris Rock at the Oscars.
According to the rumour, Netflix’s project was a crime thriller Fast and Loose, and Sony was actively working on the fourth entry in the popular Bad Boys franchise.
However, Sony chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, Tom Rothman, clarified that the company has not pulled the plug on Bad Boys 4, and that the film is still in active development.
“No. That was inaccurate. That movie’s been in development and still is,” said Rothman when Deadline reporter Mike Fleming Jr. asked him about the current state of the movie following Smith’s slap.
He added, “There weren’t any brakes to pump because the car wasn’t moving. That was a very unfortunate thing that happened, and I don’t think it’s really my place to comment, except to say that I’ve known Will Smith for many years, and I know him to be a good person.”
“That was an example of a very good person having a very bad moment, in front of the world. I believe his apology and regret is genuine, and I believe in forgiveness and redemption,” the Sony chairman concluded.
Rock addressed the infamous Oscars slap during a stand-up comedy show at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, as he was fervently greeted by attendees, inquiring, “How was your weekend?” and explaining that he didn’t “have a bunch of s—t about what happened” in his routine.
“So if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend,” Rock asserted, declaring that he was “still kind of processing what happened,” but promised the audience, “So at some point I’ll talk about that s—t. And it will be serious and funny.”
As per information initially provided by The Guardian senior editor, Lois Beckett, the comedian will not be pressing charges against the actor.
“LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program,” read the Los Angeles Police Department statement shared on Twitter by Beckett. “The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report,”
“If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report,” the statement reportedly concluded.
The above information would be later confirmed by the Oscars producer Will Packer, who separately told Variety, “They were saying, you know, this is battery, was a word they used in that moment. [LAPD] said, ‘We will go get him. We are prepared. We’re prepared to get him right now. You can press charges, we can arrest him,’”
He added, “They were laying out the options, and as they were talking, Chris was — he was being very dismissive of those options. He was like, ‘No, no, no, I’m fine.’ And even to the point where I said, ‘Rock, let them finish.’ The LAPD officers finished laying out what his options were and they said, ‘Would you like us to take any action?’ And he said no. He said no.”
