‘The Batman’ Star Robert Pattinson Says Men Face “Insidious” Body Standards
The actor got in convincing shape but in a story harkening back to old rumors indicating chaos during production, The Batman actor Robert Pattinson is calling out “insidious” standards and practices that negatively affect health and body image. In a recent interview, he described some of the wild things he tried to get into the ideal physical condition for cinematographers.

“I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks, as a detox. Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently it’s a cleanse… you definitely lose weight,” he told ES Magazine. Pattinson added “it’s very, very easy to fall into that pattern…even if you’re just watching your calorie intake, it’s extraordinarily addictive — and you don’t quite realize how insidious it is until it’s too late.”
He also revealed, “I have basically tried every fad you can think of, everything except consistency.” The star tried keto as well to no avail. I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a diet where you just eat charcuterie boards and cheese all the time?’ But I didn’t realize that you can’t have beer as it completely defeats the purpose,” he explained.
Pattinson then skirted around his training regimens, which the said rumors and interviews from 2020 hint are sparse at best. They are something he doesn’t like to address because, as he stated, “quite embarrassing when you get into a pattern of answering questions about your workout because there’ll always be a guy who’s in better shape than you.”
Salacious claims and innuendo circled filming of The Batman during COVID lockdowns when the production retreated to the confines of a sound stage. One story backed up by Pattinson’s confessed laziness proclaimed they had to shut down for two weeks because he wasn’t in satisfactory shape while the actor used James Dean’s physique as an excuse for his laxity.

A positive COVID test was the official explanation for the two-week pause in activity but the alleged issue at hand coupled with Pattinson’s remarks above shine a light on body standards for men in Hollywood that aren’t discussed often. G.I. JOE star Dennis Quaid went public years ago with his early struggles of “manorexia” in a largely forgotten story.
ES noted there is an increasing trickle-down to younger males. “Joke or not, his quotes did shine a light on the pressure men face to look a certain way, a pressure that’s been filtering down steadily to younger and younger boys,” said the magazine. Few address this supposed trend as much as the body standards for women.
Pop Culture Crisis talked about it and Pattinson’s words on a recent episode of their podcast. The hosts discussed how “hyperbolic” and “funny” the story seems at first while acknowledging double standards between the attention women receive versus men as they prepare for a tough role. Conversely, the demands of superhero movies nevertheless shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Pop Culture Crisis had an interesting conversation that delves deeper and thoughtfully into the cultural implications of Pattinson’s stance, both in Hollywood and society. They don’t make light of the topic entirely and use the examples of two Batman actors to make their points. One is the current guy, Pattinson, and his hyperbole — the other is Ben Affleck who gained serious mass for the DCEU.
