While delayed from its initial 2021 release into 2022, the Fall release window has now been narrowed to September 1st. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be launching on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch version later this year.

Developed by Daedalic Entertainment, the game is “based on the legendary The Lord of the Rings trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien.” The press release explains the game “tells of Gollum’s experiences from behind-the-scenes in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring.”

“After losing his precious ring to Bilbo Baggins,” the press release continues, “Gollum decides to leave the Misty Mountains and embark on a perilous journey that leads him from the dungeons of Barad-dûr to the realm of the Wood-elves in Mirkwood.”

“In order to survive the dangers of his journey through Middle-earth, Gollum has to sneak and climb and use all his cunning.” From prior trailers we’ve seen that cunning manifest as luring far stronger foes into traps, such as dousing orcs in molten metal

“He also has to deal with his Hobbit-self – Sméagol. It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when it comes to making important decisions, or if they prefer to allow Sméagol to take over.”

“Gollum also encounters well-known characters from the books as well as a few new faces,” the press release concludes. At least one of those characters is Gandalf the Grey.

This won’t be the only Lord of the Rings game in the near future, as EA have announced The Lord of the Rings: Heroes Of Middle-earth for mobile.

Back in February, the video game and merchandising rights for The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit went up for auction, so we’re sure to be seeing more games in the future.
