Square Enix announced a new “immersive mobile RPG experience” set in the world of their critically claimed RPG Octopath Traveler titled Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.

According to a press release from Square Enix, the mobile game will see players “experience a brand-new story in the world of Orsterra, a few years prior to the events of the beloved and award-winning RPG Octopath Traveler.”

Specifically players will take on the role of the Chosen One where they will “fight to stop ruthless tyrants who seek to unleash a bottomless darkness upon the land.”

What’s interesting is the game is described as a single-player JRPG in a trailer showing off the game’s combat system and graphics.

The press release details the game will feature HD-2D evolved pixel art noting, “The game’s classic 2D pixel art is enhanced with 3D-CG effects, bringing the wonderous world of Orsterra to life.”

As for the combat the press release details it is an “evolved command-style battle system, which utilizes up to eight party members and swipe controls that allow for fast paced command selection.”

It does appear the game will have a gacha mechanic, although this is not confirmed, as upon release it will have a character roster of over 64 characters. Square Enix explains, “Choose from over 64 characters at launch to create an endless combination of teams. Customize team builds for each fight to reign victorious on the battlefield.”

The game will feature a character interaction mechanic with Square Enix detailed that players can “unlock endless possibilities for character interactions, including the ability to ‘Inquire’ for information, ‘Entreat’ for items, or ‘Hire’ characters as a party.”

The game will also feature a soundtrack by Yasunori Nishiki who composed the original soundtrack for Octopath Traveler. The mobile game will feature new compositions.

The game is expected to be released sometime later this year. There will be a Closed Beta Test for Android deviced on March 22nd from 5:00 PM PDT through April 4th 11:59 PM PDT via Google Play.

Registration for the Closed Beta Test is available now.
