DC Faces Another Setback With Suicide Squad Sequel- Loses Director

Jaume Collet-Serra, the man who was set to take over from David Ayer for the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel will no longer be associated with the Warner Bros sequel.
A new report from Deadline indicates that Jaume Collet-Serra will join Dwayne Johnson for Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise film.
Collet-Serra’s main claim to fame was his 2016 movie The Shallows starring Blake Lively. The movie saw Lively’s character Nancy just 200 yards from shore, but being hunted by a great white shark. He’s also directed Orphan, Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night. He also just finished up The Commuter which stars Liam Neeson and is expected to hit theaters on January 12, 2018.
Deadline notes the main reason for the Spanish director to drop the Suicide Squad sequel was “the opportunity to originate a new Indiana Jones-like action-adventure franchise in lockstep with one of the most globally bankable film stars — like Gore Verbinski did with Johnny Depp in The Pirates of the Caribbean — was a better opportunity than continuing a storyline originated by another director. ”
The Suicide Squad sequel will be a highly sought after position and Warner Bros. shouldn’t have any trouble finding another filmmaker. The original film made $745 million worldwide. It also boasted a star-studded cast featuring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto. All three are expected to return.
This is the latest in Warner Bros. troubles with their DC Extended Universe. The film studio has had all sorts of trouble with their planned Batman solo film starring Ben Affleck. First, Affleck dropped out as director. Then there was a massive rewrite of the original script by Chris Terrio. Warner Bros. then brought on board Matt Reeves to direct. Reeves noted his Batman movie will be “a new story. It’s just starting again.”
However, with Warner Bros. recent success with Wonder Woman there is hope that they have finally found a path for success.
