Marvel’s The Punisher just gave us our first look at Frank Castle as a Marine before his family is ruthlessly murdered.

The image showcases Frank before his Punisher days decked out in his tactical sniper gear as a U.S. Marine.

Empire notes the image is “taken from a flashback.”

It would seem Netflix and Marvel are really going to flesh out more of Frank’s backstory and try to home in on what drives Frank Castle to deliver punishment. Bernthal elaborated:

It’s the only thing that silences the demons, temporarily. There’s going to be an attempt to move beyond the Punisher, but that’s something he can’t shake. There’s part of me that’s hungry to get back into the darkness, that’s excited to see it fall apart.

Frank Castle pre-Punisher

This is the latest in a flurry of promotions from Marvel’s The Punisher. Last week, we got a look at a number of Frank’s allies and enemies in a short teaser promo.

And before that we got a look at Frank in his full Punisher outfit.

Netflix even teased out the titles for all 13 episodes of the show in Morse code on Twitter.

A release date still has not been confirmed for Marvel’s The Punisher, but the show is expected to debut sometime this Fall.

Marvel’s The Punisher stars Jon Bernthal, Jason R. Moore, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Deborah Ann Woll, Michael Nathanson, Jaime Ray Newman, Amber Rose Revah, Paul Schulze, and Daniel Webber.
