It’s that Time of Year Again

Gotham has been known to borrow from DC Comics storylines from time to time. Jerome’s famous “face removal” was based on Scott Snyder’s Death of the Family Batman arc, after all. So it should come ad no surprise to know that the creatives of the show are looking to more classic Batman stories for some inspiration. This time, they’re looking to one of the best.

Before Jeph Loeb become Vice President of Marvel Television he was one of the best comic book writers in the business. He’s responsible for classic stories on both the DC and the Marvel sides of the comic world. But one of his pieces stands high above the rest. Though he’s worked at Marvel for years now, Loeb’s greatest contribution came by way of Batman. He and artist Tim Sale collaborated on a couple of graphic novels starring the famous character. The most famous of which has been an inspiration to storytellers for years and looks to be an influence for next season’s Gotham.

The Long Halloween.

Cameron Monaghan happens to play Jerome on the series. While the Gotham creators initially toyed with idea of Jerome dying, he didn’t. And while he wasn’t originally supposed to be a Joker origin story, he is. But that’s because Monaghan’s performance is just so good he just keeps coming back. Now, he’s dropping some major clues about next season’s adventures.

Recently, he teased the theme for the upcoming season with this particular image.

The gorgeous page by Tim Sale is as exciting as what it represents.

There’s a New Killer in Town

The killer by the name of “Holiday” haunted Gotham’s streets for an entire year. The story, which was heavily based on Film Noir and Mobsters films, is about a serial killer who murders someone on a holiday every month. Batman worked with Jim Gordon and Gotham’s District Attorney, Harvey Dent, on the case. Dent’s fall from grace is best-captured in this story. Oh, and it just so happens to be the direct influence for Harvey’s arc in The Dark Knight

The greatest compliment that can be paid to Loeb and Sale’s novel was that it was the biggest and most important influence for Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film. Aaron Eckhart’s Harvey Dent was both inspiring and horrifying, exactly like the graphic novel from which that particular Harvey originates. Harvey’s already had some good episodes on Gotham, hopefully fans and viewers can expect a few more.

While Joker isn’t a major player in The Long Halloween he’s still around. So even if Jerome won’t get as much playtime next season it’s great to see Monaghan excited about just telling a good story. And a good story is something every comic book TV show could use some more of. But at least for Gotham, things are looking up.

Gotham has had trouble in the past but this is leading to an exciting future.
