The upcoming Joker film directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker is expected to hit theaters on October 4, 2019. Not only was the release date announced, but the title for the film will simply be Joker.
The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter based off an announcement made by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow just as San Diego Comic-Con kicked off.
Along with the title and the release date we also got a description of the film. According to THR it will be an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
The film is also supposed to be a crime drama and there’s been a rumor that Thomas Wayne could feature opposite Phoenix’s Joker played by Robert DeNiro.
Phoenix talked about the role in an interview with Collider:
“I take a lot of time and consideration when making decisions and what I’m gonna work on always. So, in some ways, the process, which is obviously reading a script and meeting a filmmaker and then continuing to have meetings and discussions with Todd (Phillips). I think he’s very impressive and he seems to have a very interesting understanding of this world and what he’s trying to say. And so there is something very appealing about that and working with him on this particular project. It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f***ing s**t out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most.”
The budget for the film will be much lower than most other superhero projects with around $55 million. Although it will still have quite a bit more than Todd McFarlane’s upcoming Spawn film.
The movie will be produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff with Richard Baratta executive producing. Previous reports had Martin Scorcese attached to produce. Many reports were indicating it would be influenced by Scorcese’s King of Comedy from the 1980s.
