Pirates of the Caribbean Star Wants All-Female Ship For Next Movie
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales star Kaya Scodelario says she wants an “all-female pirate crew.”
Scodelario played astrologist Carina Smyth who gets caught up in Captain Jack Sparrow and Henry Turner’s quest to discover Posideon’s trident. Smyth is also the daughter of Geoffery Rush’s Captain Barbossa. She also develops a budding romance with Henry.
A post-credits scene set up another possible installment in the franchise:
Scodelario spoke to Screen Rant about her idea of an all-female pirate crew:
Well, when I signed up for the first one, I signed up for two movies. So I am contractually obliged, but I’d love to [do it]. I think there’s a lot we can still do. I’d like see a Carina who takes the helm of Barbossa on the sea – have her own all-female pirate crew.
However, Scodelario did say she’s unsure if Disney will move forward with another Pirates of the Caribbean film:
I think it would be a lot of fun to go back. It was an amazing experience to shoot […] so many people all watch it and find joy in it – it crosses generations. People enjoy these movies and […] people still want to see them. I think it’s important that we make sure it’s good and if people want it and we can find the right script, I’d love to be a part of it. But as of now, I haven’t heard anything.
Dead Men Tell No Tales currently sits at the #13 highest grossing domestic film of 2017 with $172.5 million in total gross. While it’s only #13 domestically, the movie performed well abroad landing at #8 as of this writing with $794.6 million worldwide gross. It’s the worst performing Pirates movie to date in the United States making nearly $93.5 million less than Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. However, the movie did outperform Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on the worldwide stage bringing in more than $140 million than the film that launched the franchise.
While the box office numbers might not look as good as other Pirates films, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer did say Pirates 6 would get the green light if DVD and Blu-Ray sales performed well.
Well, I hope we can continue to make it, but you know we’ve been having so much fun just promoting this one right now that we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully it’s very successful on DVD as the other ones have been. Then hopefully we’ll sit down and see where we go.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is out now for digital download and comes to Blu-ray and DVD on October 3, 2017.
Meanwhile, you can see Scoldelario in the upcoming Maze Runner: The Death Cure due out next year.
