Wonder Woman Director Patty Jenkins Reveals Time Period of Wonder Woman 3
There is an update on the nascent Wonder Woman 3 which is currently gestating in the mind of director Patty Jenkins. She previously stated that she has a third movie in mind but wasn’t very specific. In fairness, Jenkins only began spreading the notion she is conceptualizing one last week.
A question immediately arose that she might do like the X-Men movies — and, of course, her own work in Wonder Woman 1984 — and carry on the motif of stories set in bygone decades or the recent past. But, The Hollywood Reporter reported Jenkins confirmed her intention for Wonder Woman 3 is to give Diana Prince modern environs to work in.
“I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.”
Jenkins prefaced by saying she was not set but also “not doing another period” film. Wonder Woman 3 is not a lock just yet, and may depend on the success of 1984. We don’t even know for sure if Jenkins will direct it, but she proved in her career (and from her quite brief time dealing with Marvel) she wants what is right for her projects, and can tell what works.
If it’s a modern day setting she wants to turn to for her arc for Wonder Woman, Jenkins will probably fight for it. And she might get her way if Warner’s new head Toby Emmerich keeps his word and maintains an operation focused on its directors.
All will depend on Patty Jenkins’ working relationship with the studio and Warner’s commitment to saving the DC Extended Universe.
Wonder Woman 1984 won’t be out until 2020 and will follow the releases of Shazam! and Birds of Prey.
