Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man to Get Television Adaptation on FX, Expected to Debut in 2020

FX announced that Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s acclaimed comic book series will debut in 2020 as a television series.

FX revealed a synopsis for the upcoming show in a press release, “All of the men are dead.  But one. Y traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival.”

The series will star Diane Lane, Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Julian Canfield, Marin Ireland, and Amiber Tamblyn.

FX’s President of Original Programming Nick Grad is excited about the series:

“Y: The Last Man is a towering achievement among graphic novel storytelling and it’s been rewarding to work with this outstanding team. Michael Green and Aïda Mashaka Croal have partnered with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson to deliver a stunning new expression of this fascinating and timely story. Melina Matsoukas, who directed the pilot, did an incredible job bringing it to life with Diane Lane and this stellar cast.”

Michael Green and Mashaka Croal will serve as the showrunners as well as executive producers. They added their own thoughts:

“Brian and Pia’s exploration of a world without men is a favorite for its depth, its humor, its insights and its monkey. Adapted today it offers us a cracked mirror to look at our own very cracked world. We thank them for their trust — we thank FX for their support — and we thank the casting gods for letting us work with this incredible group of actors.”

Executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson revealed Y: The Last Man is their favorite comic series:

“Y is our favorite comic book series ever and we are thrilled to FINALLY bring it to the screen. We are grateful that Brian entrusted it to us and FX, and can’t wait for the world to see Michael and Aïda’s adaptation.”

Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s comic series followed Yorick Brown and his monkey Ampersand as they traverse a world where every organism with a Y chromosome has perished except for them. Yorick teams up with Agent 355 of the Culper Ring and Dr. Allison Mann to discover why he survived and how they might repopulate the Earth. The team travel across the globe and are hunted by a number of different groups including the Daughters of the Amazon.

The series was published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint from 2002 to 2008. The series ran for 60 issues and has been collected in ten paperback volumes as well as a series of five hardcover “Deluxe” volumes. The series won the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in 2008.

The series has been in development at FX since at least October 2015 when The Hollywood Reporter indicated they were developing the series.
