Beachler was nominated for production design while Hart was nominated for set decoration. The two beat out The Favourite’s Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton, First Man’s Nathan Crowley and Kathy Lucas, Mary Poppins Returns’ John Myhre and Gordon Sim, and Roma’s Eugenio Caballero and Bárbara Enríquez.
Beachler discussed how her nomination was “breaking down walls” when she received the nomination.
“It means breaking down walls and opening up something for the next to come through for people, for young women of color and boys and girls of color to see that this is not impossible.”
She would add:
“I hope I’m the last of the first. And now it’s just going to be business as usual and people from all backgrounds and all colors and all religions could do this work, and maybe I’ve made it a little easier for them.”
Black Panther was nominated for seven Academy Awards. The movie has taken home two Oscars so far. The film lost to Bohemian Rhapsody for Sound Mixing and Sound Editing. It still is nominated for Best Picture, Music (Original Song), and Music (Original Score).
