Kevin Feige Responsible for Having Captain Marvel Inspire Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative
**Warning Spoilers for Captain Marvel Below**
Kevin Feige was responsible for Carol Danvers being the inspiration for Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative according to Captain Marvel co-director Ryan Fleck.
If you’ve seen the film, you know that Nick Fury is writing up his Defenders Protocol when he looks at a photo of Carol Danvers and sees that her call sign is Avenger. The scene insinuates that Danvers’ call sign is the reason Fury changed the name from the Defenders Protocol to the Avengers Initiative.
Fleck tells Empire, “Kevin Feige and the Marvel team said, ‘We want her to be inspiring Nick Fury to create the Avengers by the end of this movie.'”
Fleck also explains why they decided to not actually show Jackson typing Avengers Initiative on his computer.
“We did shoot him actually writing the Avengers Initiative on the screen, and it just felt like we didn’t need to see it.”
Fury discusses his idea for The Avengers Initiative in the first Avengers movie.
While trying to inspire Iron Man and Captain America to work together as a team, Fury says:
“There was an idea, Stark knows this, called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to. To fight the battles we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea. In heroes. Well, it’s an old-fashioned notion.”
Having Carol Danvers inspire Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative is a huge retcon that negates the title of the first Captain America movie, Captain America: The First Avenger.
The movie tells you right there that Captain America was the first Avenger. It’s also a slap in the face of Ant-Man, where it’s revealed Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne were already working with S.H.I.E.L.D. as superheroes during the Cold War. In fact, in the opening scene Pym resigns in 1989!

Both Captain America: The First Avenger and Ant-Man even suggest that Nick Fury didn’t even come up with the idea of the Avengers.
Peggy Carter and Howard Stark had been working with superheroes since World War II. They worked directly with Captain America and they also worked with Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. They already had heroes facing threats that they couldn’t handle alone.
Fury might have written the idea down, but it definitely existed before him and was put into action before he had written down.
