Rumor: Amber Heard’s Role as Mera in Aquaman Sequel in Doubt After Johnny Depp Lawsuit
A new rumor indicates Amber Heard’s role as Mera in the Aquaman sequel might be in doubt following a lawsuit by her ex-husband Johnny Depp that accuses the actress of assault.
The rumor comes from Cosmic Book News which states, “The future of Amber Heard as Mera in Aquaman 2 and continued DC movies may be in doubt as the actress is getting sued by former husband Johnny Depp for $50 million over defamation and false allegations of domestic abuse.”
Depp’s lawsuit alleges that Heard falsely describes herself as a victim of domestic violence in an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post just days before Aquaman hit theaters. The op-ed is titled, “Amber Heard: I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”
Not only is Heard accused of falsely describing herself as a victim of domestic violence, but it alleges that Heard is actually the perpetrator of domestic violence. It details that Heard chopped off part of Johnny Depp’s fingers that had to be surgically reattached. It also details that she threw bottles of vodka at him and at one point she repeatedly punched him in the face giving him a black eye. The lawsuit notes, “Ms. Heard threw dangerous objects at Mr. Depp, and also kicked and punched him regularity.”
Following Heard’s op-ed in The Washington Post, Depp was removed from his leading role as Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Disney removed him four days after the op-ed was published.
Heard has portrayed Mera in two films. She first appeared as the Xebel princess in Justice League and would reprise her role in James Wan’s Aquaman.
The Aquaman sequel is currently in development and is currently slated for a December 15, 2022 release.
One thing Heard might have going for her is the fact that Warner Bros. appears to be open to giving directors and actors second chances. After Disney fired James Gunn for his numerous tweets about pedophilia, the studio offered him the opportunity to both write and direct an upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Not only that, but Heard already had an arrest on her record from 2009 where she physically assaulted Tasya van Ree at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The charges were dismissed after Heard appeared in front of a judge.
Van Ree told the E! News back in 2016 when Heard and Depp were going through a divorce, “In 2009, Amber was wrongfully accused for an incident that was misinterpreted and over-sensationalized by two individuals in a powerful position.” She added, “I recount hints of misogynistic attitudes toward us which alter appeared to be homophobic when they found out we were domestic partners and not just “friends.” Charges were quickly dropped and she was released moments later.”
What do you make of this rumor? Do you think Amber Heard’s role as Mera might be in jeopardy due to Johnny Depp’s lawsuit?
