The Suicide Squad: James Gunn’s Brother Sean Gunn Isn’t a Lock for the Reboot Yet

The Suicide Squad is coming together nicely for the folks at Warner Bros. Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney are returning, Idris Elba is coming aboard, and writer James Gunn is set to direct as well. Hopefully, they’ll right the wrongs from the original.

What has some people wondering is what capacity James will utilize his little brother Sean. Sean Gunn spoke to ComicBook.com over the weekend. He doesn’t know if he will be a part of the new Suicide Squad, as he has been for so many of his brother’s projects, but says he’s game.

“You know, I have no idea. I’m always willing to do anything he [James] needs me to do. I’m also very, very respectful of the creative process from the point of view of the people who are writing and coming up with the story. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that story is king.”

In regards to The Suicide Squad’s story, Gunn humbly discussed putting a good story first before writing him into the script.

“You know, in order for the movie to be good, the story has to be great, and it’s hard to make a great story if you’re thinking, ‘Hmm, I have to work this person in there somewhere.’ So I just let him do his thing. If he has a role for me, to let me know and I’ll do it. And if he doesn’t, I have no doubt that it’s because he’s serving a different kind of story where there is not a role for me and I’m totally respectful of that too.”

The two Gunns have collaborated since James’s days at Troma and he typically finds a place for Sean in his movies. Sean Gunn acted on set as Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy for reference and played Yondu’s right hand man in Kraglin.

Set for August 6, 2021, The Suicide Squad is the fifth upcoming release from Warner/DC behind Joker, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Batman.
