Avengers: Endgame Rakes in the Cash with $1.2 Billion Global Debut
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame opened to $1.2 billion worldwide. The film reportedly opened in North America with an impressive $350 million in its first three days. To add to the impressive North American take, the film dominated in China as well with a $330.5 million opening. It reportedly brought in $107 million n China in just its first day. The film had a record first day-gross in North America of $156.7 million.
The North America debut at $350 million shatters Disney’s expectations which our source told us was at $250 million for its opening weekend. In fact, according to a press release from Disney, Avengers: Endgame is the first film to ever break the $300 million domestic debut line. Marvel’s The Avengers was the first film to cross the $200 million debut mark in 2012.
The film would break numerous records including the largest Thursday Previews with $60 million. It beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the previous record holder, by a cool $3 million.
It had the largest opening day and single day with $156.7 million on Friday. It would dethrone The Force Awakens that had brought in $119.1 million. It would go on on to have both the largest Saturday and Sunday box office takes as well. On Saturday it brought in $109 million beating Avengers: Infinity War that raked in $82.1 million. On Sunday Endgame made $84.3 million topping Infinity War that made $69.2 million.
Maybe the biggest feather in Avengers: Endgame’s cap is its record setting worldwide opening. It raked in $859 million at the international box office dethroning the previous record holder in The Fate and the Furious. That film only debuted with $443.15 million at the international box office. In fact, Avengers: Endgame broke records for the biggest box office takes in 44 different markets including Australia, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn praised Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios and indicated Endgame is not the end of the MCU:
“Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office. Though ‘Endgame’ is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”
Feige credited Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for the success of the MCU and Avengers: Endgame:
“From the very beginning with ‘Iron Man,’ all we’ve wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life onscreen the way we’ve experienced them as fans of the comics. That we’ve had so many other successes in this journey leading to this unbelievable result with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has been almost entirely due to the fans around the world who have supported us through it all. Our directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, and our writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, really brought this story home, and I am also incredibly thankful for our cast and filmmakers from across the MCU and all who’ve worked so hard to make these films the best they can be, including the amazing teams at Marvel Studios and Disney. And of course, without Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, none of this would have been possible.”
Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo thanked fans for supporting the film and the MCU:
“We poured our heart and soul into ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ hoping to tell a story that would inspire audiences around the world. Our family of cast and crew felt honored to be entrusted with bringing the Infinity Saga to a close. To Kevin Feige, everyone at Disney and Marvel, and the incredible, global community of fans – thank you.”
Box Office Mojo reports the film’s demographics were 57% male with 61% of the audience 25 years old or older.
With Avengers: Endgame’s opening weekend box office take it puts the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s collective box office haul at $19.9 billion.
