Report: Matt Reeves’ The Batman to Feature Penguin, Catwoman, and “Half-a-Dozen Villains”

A new report indicates Matt Reeves’ The Batman will feature The Penguin and Catwoman as villains. However, it also details the movie could feature “half-a-dozen villains.”

The report comes from The Hollywood Reporter (THR) and is fueled by actor Josh Gad’s response to the reports that Twilight actor Robert Pattinson had been cast as Batman.

THR reports, “Matt Reeves is still tweaking his script, which is rumored to have at least two villains, the Penguin being one of them, according to sources (one person is telling us there will be around half-a-dozen villains!). ”

Their report also eludes to the idea that Catwoman could also show up in the film, “We’re hearing of another purrfect character making an appearance in the script as well.”

The idea of Penguin being the main villain of the film has been rumored for quite a while now. We reported back in May of last year that there were rumblings of the Penguin. In fact, at that time Black Panther and Star Wars actor Andy Serkis’ name was swirling around the character.

However, the actor who seems to have made the biggest push to take on the Penguin is Josh Gad and he responded to the news that Robert Pattinson had been cast as Batman simply stating, “Eh. I could take him.”

Even graphic artist Boss Logic indicates that Josh Gad will be confirmed as Penguin writing, “I think they will confirm Josh Gad as penguin since he was rumoured around the same time.”

As for the reports about multiple villains, that isn’t new either. Screenwriter Mark Hughes reported back in February of this year that the film would be “peppered w/multiple villains.” He indicated that a number of them would be “filling in Gotham’s population in cameos/supporting roles.”

The idea of multiple villains makes sense given what Matt Reeves has told us about his Batman film. Back in January, Reeves detailed that his Batman film is “very much a point of view-driven noir Batman tale.” He added, “It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in films.”

He continued:

“He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Notice Reeves indicates that Batman will be “tracking down the criminals.” It’s more than likely those criminals will be Batman villains in some way shape or form.

Do you think Penguin and Catwoman will show up in Matt Reeves’ The Batman? Are you excited about his film? Who would you want to play these characters?
