Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Might Only Be Attached to One Star Wars Film
Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss might only be attached to one of the three upcoming Star Wars films.
Disney released their Star Wars movie schedule earlier this month. It included three untitled Star Wars films that would be released to theaters in 2022, 2024, and 2026.
It’s possible that only the film slated for 2022 might be done by Benioff and Weiss.
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently talked about the future of Star Wars at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit. Iger confirmed Benioff and Weiss would be working on the next Star Wars film. However, he stopped short of indicating just how many films they are attached to.
Iger stated:
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game Of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs. And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy’s recent comments also don’t specifically confirm that Benioff and Weiss will be working on a trilogy or even a series of films. She spoke to EW in April stating, “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars. They’re working very closely with Rian.” Kennedy does not indicate how many films they are currently attached to.
Kennedy did note, “We’re just not looking at what the next three movies might be, or talking about this in terms of a trilogy. We’re looking at: What is the next decade of storytelling?” The EW article mentions the creative brain trust will be the ones mapping out this next decade. It’s unclear if Benioff, Weiss, and Johnson are apart of it.
In fact, when Star Wars announced that Benioff and Weiss would be working on new films, they left the number vague, only indicating they would “write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.” They did make it clear that Benioff and Weiss’ films would be different from Johnson’s announced trilogy.
When Star Wars announced Rian Johnson would be returning to the franchise, they specifically indicated he would be working on a trilogy. That announcement was made prior to Disney releasing The Last Jedi into theaters. Since then, rumors have swirled that Johnson might actually be on the outs at Star Wars and his trilogy is no longer in development. Johnson has claimed there is no legitimacy to those rumors.
With only three movies on the upcoming slate, something has to give. It’s possible things might have changed and Benioff and Weiss might actually be working with Johnson as Kennedy intimates.
Maybe the most interesting piece to all of this Star Wars speculation is that Kathleen Kennedy’s contract as the president of Lucasfilm was only renewed for 3 years beginning in 2018. That would mean her contract would expire in 2021 a year before the first new Star Wars film will hit theaters.
Despite, Kennedy’s talk of developing the next decade of Star Wars films, it’s possible she could be out before Benioff and Weiss’ film hits theaters.
If Disney does decide to shake-up things at Lucasfilm, it more than likely will not happen until after J.J. Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker has been released into theaters. Disney will want to generate a positive image of the next film, especially after Johnson’s The Last Jedi.
What do you make of all of this? Do you think I’m looking too deeply into what Iger and Kennedy have said? Or do you think there is something to the words they use and the fact they haven’t confirmed who is working on which films? What are your thoughts on the future of Star Wars films?
