A Fan Rewrote Season 8 of Game of Thrones – Goes Viral on Reddit!
Game of Thrones was the pinnacle of fantasy-action television, however the final season left viewers wanting. Honestly, the only good thing to come out of Season 8 were the memes. Fans are begging for a new season with a petition that currently has over 1.5 million signatures. However, one fan has taken things into her own hands and has re-written the entirety of season 8.
Longer and Better
The author, Alice Shipwise, started the project shortly after the end of season 7 as a writing exercise. She details , “I started this project shortly after Season 7 wrapped, out of love and enthusiasm for the show. The tenth episode is currently in-progress, out of eleven total.” 11 episodes is already putting us past the measly 6 episodes of producers Benioff and Weiss’ version.
The internet erupted after her friend, Reddit user AstroTrains, posted, “My friend wrote scripts for an entire alternate GoT Season 8, and they’re so f****** great I’m buying reddit ads to help get the word out.”
AstroTrains later posted an update:
“Wow, I didn’t think this would actually get upvotes. 500 karma for an ad seems kinda bananas.
I initially put this ad up as a gift for my friend, Alice. It’s honestly blown away expectations. I’ve showed it to Alice and she is really surprised and tickled by the positive comments here!
We wanted to be transparent and let you know that Alice has now decided to invest some of her own savings toward keeping the ad running. The title says that *I* am buying the ad, which was true at the time I put it up. We tried to edit it, but Reddit said doing that would remove all the karma and comments (argh!) It just performed a lot better than I expected, and blew through the initial budget in about 45 min.
Alice quit her job last year to be a full-time writer/storyteller. Her main project is an original medieval fantasy called Beastling, which she’s hoping will eventually get picked up for TV. She hasn’t been promoting this GoT project much, it was mostly for her own learning to practice screenwriting. But given the positive response here, we think maybe it could help her get noticed by the industry. So she’s decided to treat it as a business investment and gamble big on continuing to fund this ad.
Anyway, I’m really hoping to watch Alice’s work on HBO or Netflix one day, so if you feel so inspired, consider sharing the scripts around to your friends or communities 🙂
Edit: Thanks for the Reddit Platinum, but seriously, go and give your karma and gildings on the Author’s post.”
The Scripts Are Not Bad, Timid However
Personally, I didn’t mind these scripts. While, I have not read all of them (please comment if you find the time to do so!), there were no big shocks or surprises that jumped out. Lyanna Mormont still pledged allegiance to Jon Snow and Daenerys Targarean and Arya and Jon had a reunion scene. Everything we expected from the end of season 7 occurred.
The only scene I could consider wildly different from what we were delivered or what was expected to happen was Jon proposing marriage. No, I’m serious. Context, Jon is trying to leave Dany after they had just slept together, ignoring Sam’s wishes of talking to Bran, and he says it is not proper for the two of them to be together. He says if they get married, it will be appropriate for them to do this.
Yes, I’ll admit I was a little shocked, but then again, I could totally see Jon doing this. The writing is good and it totally makes me think that we were robbed of the season 8 we deserved. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
