Ryan Reynolds Teases Deadpool for Marvel Phase 5!
Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram to tease the arrival of Deadpool to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 5.
Reynolds posted an image of a conspiracy board that asks, “Who Leaked?” referring to the test footage of the first Deadpool. That test footage and the overwhelmingly positive fan reaction to it inspired Fox executives to greenlight the first Deadpool film which would go on to gross $363 million domestically and $783 million worldwide.
Along with the image Reynolds teased Deadpool’s arrival in Phase writing, “Investigation heading into year 5. Or as I call it, ‘Phase 5.’ The point is, I love conspiracy-yarn. #LeakAversary”
As Reynolds points out, it has been five years since that test footage leaked out. It’s possible the Instagram post could just be referencing Reynolds’ claimed investigation into the leak. However, he cleverly dubs the investigation “Phase 5.”
And this could be an indicator for the over-speculative nerds. All we need is a possibility for Deadpool in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Give us an inch, and we’ll take it a mile.
However, there is no official talk about Marvel outside of Phase 4. Marvel did announce an upcoming Blade film that will star Mahershala Ali. That film is not expected to be in Phase 4, so it’s possible it could join Deadpool in Phase 5.
Now that Deadpool is part of Disney, it’s almost inevitable that a third film would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it’s possible Disney could launch Deadpool under a new brand. Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed the possibility of a Marvel R-rated brand. Iger told investors back in 2017:
It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine.
Iger echoed that statement in call with investors this past February. As reported by Variety, Iger stated, “We will continue in that business. There’s certainly popularity with those types of films.” He did add that Disney will have to carefully brand the films “so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer.”
Blade Reunion
With the announcement of the Blade film starring Mahershala Ali, it’s possible we see could Reynolds reunite with the Daywalker. Reynolds previously starred in Blade Trinity alongside Wesley Snipes. It’d be a great way to tie together two R-rated films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, that’s a big if on whether or not Disney chooses to go the R-rated route with Blade. The previous films starring Wesley Snipes were all R-rated.
There’s a lot to look forward to with Disney’s mature branding if these are the teases for Phase 5.
What do you think about Deadpool getting his third film under the Marvel Mature Brand? What do you think about his movie being part of the larger swath of films under that banner? Sound off in the comments below, or let’s talk about it on social media!
