Star Wars Rumor: Luke Skywalker Miniseries In Development for Disney+

A new rumor suggests Lucasfilm and Disney are working on a new Star Wars miniseries focusing on Luke Skywalker for Disney+.

The rumor comes from TVO at Lords of the Long Box.

TVO notes the show is still in early development and there are a couple of ways they could take the show.

He states, “There are two ways in which they are talking about how to pursue this. One way would be to have it take place with a different, much younger actor. Possibly, Sebastian Stan.”

He goes on to indicate the show would take place after Return of the Jedi, the same time frame The Mandalorian is taking place, “Post Return of the Jedi. We are talking Luke right after Return of the Jedi. In between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.”

He adds the other option would  “combine the premise of the pre-Force Awakens Mark Hamill flashing back and forth, talking about that time period.”

Back in 2017, Sebastian Stan did a spoof for MTV News where he auditioned to play Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. At the end of the spoof Stan states, “I’m like really believing I had a shot at this movie thanks to you.”

The idea of a Luke Skywalker show might be high up on Disney’s list given how fans reacted to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi and its portrayal of Luke. Disney might want to create a miniseries around Luke Skywalker in order to try and rebuild Luke’s image in the minds of fans who have become disaffected with the Star Wars brand and franchise under Disney.

If Disney does decide to go this route with a Luke Skywalker miniseries, they could leverage years of Extended Universe (EU) material detailing Luke’s adventures after Return of the Jedi. It’s possible they could use this miniseries to introduce popular EU character Mara Jade, the former Emperor’s Hand who became a Jedi and married Luke. In fact, TVO notes that Lucasfilm might be working on a Mara Jade series for Disney+.
