Paladins, Realm Royale, and SMITE To Get Cross Platform Updates

Gamers have long dreamt of cross-platform play for all their games. The ability to play with friends who have the same games but play on different platforms is a feature so many of us have held out hope for.

Well, fans of Paladins, Realm Royale, and SMITE, your time is here. Hi-Rez Studios announced PlayStation 4 will join the cross platform play between Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Paladins will have the feature first, rolled into its latest update called Pirate’s Treasure. It went live on September 11, 2019.

SMITE will get its full cross play on September 17th during their next update titled Underworld: Odyssey.

Realm Royale is scheduled for its full cross-play sometime in early October.

Hi-Rez Studios promised, “This commitment to cross-play compatible experiences extends to all of our games, including the recently announced Rogue Company, a team-based shooter focusing on high action gameplay that’s launching with PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC cross-play in 2020.”

For gamers new to these games, they’re all free to play. Paladins is widely considered to be an Overwatch alternative, it has similar mechanics and character class setups. (Related: After Censoring Their Latest Champion Furia, Paladins Game Developer Comes to Their Senses!)

Realm Royale is the battle royale version of Paladins, and plays somewhat similar to Fortnite in certain ways. The difference with Realm Royale is that at the beginning of the game, you can choose one of 5 different fantasy classes, and it has a bit more depth and variance.

SMITE is a MOBA game that is kind of League of Legends lite. You are a mythological God, using powers and different tactics against other players. Players are grouped in teams of up to 5 people, as you struggle to control the map and beat the opposing army. (Related: ‘SMITE’ Jumps from the PC Straight into a Graphic Novel)

This is truly a significant development for the future of full cross-platform gaming. All three of these titles are popular, widely played, and streamed on Twitch, Mixer, and other streaming platforms. Hopefully this will build more momentum toward bigger titles and gaming franchises going full cross-play.

As both a gamer and streamer, this is very welcome news.
