First Look at Gemma Chan as Sersi in Marvel’s Eternals

New set photos of Gemma Chan as Sersi in Marvel Studios’ upcoming The Eternals film are here.

IN the photos below you can see Chan’s Sersi walking around London and even taking some pictures and enjoying a cup of coffee. The character appears to be trying to blend in, but it’s also possible she could be using modern technology in the form of the cellphone to do some reconnaissance. London was the scene of a recent attack from Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it’s possible she could be scoping out the damage and fallout from the attack.

These set photos come shortly after photos captured a very blonde Angelina Jolie as Thena. (Related: First Look: Angelina Jolie as Thena in Marvel Studios Eternals)

Those set photos showed Jolie performing what looks to be a burial ritual with an urn of ashes. I speculated at the time she could be honoring her father Zuras and spreading his ashes in the lake.  In the comics, Thena inherits the Eternals’ seat of power from Zuras after he died in battle against the Celestials. This would be an adaptation of Peter B. Gillis, Sal Buscema, and Al Gordon’s Eternals series from 1982.

Who is Sersi?

As for Gemma Chan’s Sersi, she’s different than most Eternals in the fact that she would actually venture out in the world and live among humanity. On a number of occasions she would actually join the Avengers. She also would be a key historical figure interacting with Merlin and Odysseus. In fact, she even had a romantic relationship with Dane Whitman aka the Black Knight, who will be played by Game of Thrones actor Kit Harrington. This will be Chan’s second go around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She recently portrayed the Kree warrior Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel.

The Eternals

As for the Eternals themselves in the words of Jack Kirby, “The Eternals took to the highest mountain tops. They probed the universe with their minds and developed powers which suprassed those of all other Earth life. They were regarded with awe and fear.” Kirby added, “The Eternal! He was more a child of the Gods than of Earth…He reached for the universe! The Eternals bred few in number and were immune to time and death, they live apart from all other living beings.” (Related: Majority of Marvel’s Eternals Cast Are Race and Gender-Swapped from Jack Kirby’s Original Creation)

Kevin Feige confirmed Eternals would be looking to tap into Kirby’s creation back in February, “You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

The Eternals film is directed by Chloe Zhao. It is currently in production.
