Star Wars and Lucasfilm unveiled a brand new alien named Babu Frik for the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker film.

Babu Frik is described as a “tiny Anzellan droidsmith.” Frik “works among the Spice Runners of Kijimi and can reprogram or modify virtually any droid – regardless of the security measures protecting its systems.”

Take a look:

The reveal of the character and his abilities seem to lend credence to the rumors surrounding C-3PO.

Those rumors indicated that C-3PO would play an essential role to the plot of the film as the Resistance attempts to acquire a device called the Wayfinder that will give them the location to a weapons cache that was hidden in deep space by Emperor Palpatine before the fall of the Galactic Empire. The rumors from August detail that C-3PO’s old memory unit contains the location of the Wayfinder and thus the key to the weapons cache.

However, the old memory unit is located in an abandoned Imperial blockade. After retrieving that unit, the memory unit needs to be unlocked using a decommissioned droid factory. However, the wrong memory unit is uploaded into C-3PO and he adopts an aggressive persona even stealing Chewbacca’s bowcaster.

Official Star Wars posters confirmed C-3PO will be wielding a bowcaster.

Here’s a better look:

And one more for good measure.

The idea that something will happen with C-3PO’s programming was heavily hinted when the droid appeared with red eyes in a teaser trailer clip from Disney D23 Expo.

It’s quite possible Babu Frik might be key in returning C-3PO to the way he was before. Or he might be the one who actually reprograms C-3PO with the aggressive persona rather than an old memory unit.

I could even see them trying to have Babu Frik attempt to unlock C-3PO’s old memories in order to find the location of the Wayfinder. However, this new alien makes a mistake and turns C-3PO into a wannabe Terminator.

What do  you make of this new Star Wars character? What kind of role do you think he will play?
