Backdoor Pilot for Arrow Spinoff Title and Synopsis Announced

Brand-new details emerged concerning the installment of Arrow that will serve as the backdoor pilot for the Canaries spinoff starring Katherine McNamara (Mia Smoak), Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance), and Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake). It has a title, first and foremost.

The CW released a synopsis for the upcoming episode, called Green Arrow and the Canaries. Mia, who now goes by last name Queen, is back in 2040. Her life is closer to perfect than before but Laurel and Dinah drop back into it, upending things all over again.

Mia must wear the hood one more time and help her comrades foil a kidnapping. Here is the official story description:

“It’s the year 2040 in Star City and Mia Queen (McNamara) has everything she could have ever wanted. However, when Laurel (Cassidy) and Dinah (Harkavy) suddenly show up in her life again, things take a shocking turn and her perfect world is upended. Laurel and Dinah are tracking a kidnapping victim with direct ties to Mia and they need her help. Knowing it will change everything, Mia can’t help but be a hero and she, Laurel and Dinah suit up once again to save the city.”

Last we saw Mia, she was crossing the Multiverse in a futile mission with John Constantine to reunite her father’s soul with his body. Stuck in purgatory, Oliver was claimed by The Spectre (Stephen Lobo).

Katie Cassidy first pitched the concept that became Green Arrow and the Canaries to the network. They greenlit it in September and the backdoor pilot – written by Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship, and Oscar Balderrama – was announced.

McNamara tweeted a photo with her castmates to mark the occasion.

Arrow is in its eighth and final season, ready to step aside and let other stalwarts of the Arrowverse, like Canaries, take the reins. Below is a partial synopsis for this season:

“As the Green Arrow, Oliver successfully saved his city with the help of his team including former soldier John Diggle (David Ramsey), computer-science expert Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), former protégé Roy Harper (Colton Haynes), street-savvy Rene Ramirez (Rick Gonzalez), metahuman Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy), brilliant inventor Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) and Earth-2 Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). In the wake of discovering what his future holds, Oliver will find himself pit against his most challenging battle yet, one that will leave the multiverse hanging in the balance. In Arrow’s final season, Oliver Queen is forced to confront the reality of what it means to be a hero.”
