‘LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special’ Producer Insinuates Rey Will Be Luke Skywalker’s Master
The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm recently announced that LEGO and Star Wars are teaming up for a a Lego Star Wars Holiday Special that will premiere on Disney Plus in November.
In their press release announcing the new special, Disney details that the special will reunite “Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose and the droids for a joyous feast on Life Day, a holiday first introduced in the 1978 ‘Star Wars Holiday Special.'”
Not only will it reunite these characters from the sequel trilogy, but the story will take place following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and will see Rey and BB-8 travel through the Star Wars timeline.
As they travel through the timeline they will encounter Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and other iconic Star Wars characters and heroes.
Here’s their official description:
“Rey leaves her friends to prepare for Life Day as she sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi Temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit?”
Executive Producer Josh Rimes would expand on that description telling USA Today, “It’s a celebration of the saga. A lot of characters will be interacting with different characters and perhaps even different versions of themselves at different ages.
USA Today’s Brian Truitt confirms that Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren will all “hang out together.” Rimes adds, “It’s really hilarious with what’s going to happen with those guys.”
Truitt would then detail that the film will also see an older Rey encountering a young Rebel Luke Skywalker from the original 1977 Star Wars film.
He writes, “But the heart and soul of the special is Rey’s relationship with Luke – not the old Jedi master she knew, but instead the rookie Rebel version from George Lucas’ original 1977 “Star Wars” movie.”
Josh Rimes would then that insinuate that Rey will actually become Luke’s master. He states, “It becomes a much different take on a teacher and apprentice with the more seasoned Rey and a younger Luke.”
Rimes claims the special is inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Christmas Vacation, and Burl Ives’ “musical cheer.” One has to assume they mean Burl Ives’ iconic Christmas music.
He also hopes the special will be “as beloved as like ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.'” He concluded, “It’ll bring a little joy to this world in this very, very crazy year we’re having.”
The special is produced by Atomic Cartoons, the LEGO Group, and Lucasfilm. It is directed by Ken Cunningham and written by David Shayne. Shayne also serves as a co-executive producer alongside James Waugh, Rimes, Jason Cosler, Jacqui Lopez, Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone.
The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special will arrive on Disney Plus on Tuesday, November 17th.
