The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It Takes Top Spot At Box Office
A Quiet Place Part II was dethroned in its second week at the box office falling to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It took the top spot from A Quiet Place Part II grossing $24 million in the first weekend of June according to The-Numbers.
A Quiet Place Part II came in second bringing in $19.2 million. It brought the total gross for the film up to $88.3 million.
Cruella came in a distant third with $11 million bringing the total gross for that film up to $43.4 million.
Universal’s Spirt Untamed came in fourth with $6.1 million and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon rounded out the top five with $1.2 million. Raya now sits at $53.5 million total gross domestically.
The total gross for the weekend was $65.2 million down from $81.4 million over the three day Memorial Day weekend.
The-Numbers claims the gross for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It “is the best evidence yet that box office is recovering.”
They point out that the last film in The Conjuring franchise, Annabelle Comes Home opened with $20.3 million. Not only that, but they also note that the film outperformed their predictions which was between $10 and $15 million.
On top of that they point to their model that claims that the movie saw “74% of its usual audience came out to watch the film, which is the second-best performance for any film we’ve analyzed during the pandemic.”
The-Numbers goes on to claim that due to the performance of this weekend, their model will adjust the percentage of general audience goers up to 43% from 37%. They claim “that’s the highest that number has reached during the pandemic.”
The-Numbers are not the only ones to have an optimistic look for the domestic box office.
Box Office Pro also believes that the performance of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and A Quiet Place Part II “offers additional proof that North American audiences remain committed to the moviegoing experience despite the wide availability of at-home streaming options.”
YouTuber OMB Reviews also seemed to be optimistic about the box office results specifically for A Quiet Place Part II and The Conjuring.
He stated, “Very strong couple of weeks for A Quiet Place Part II. Seems to be a pretty strong start for The Conjuring 3 especially based off the $39 million budget that it had.”
While he was optimistic on A Quiet Place Part II and The Conjuring, OMB Reviews had a more pessimistic outlook on Disney’s Cruella.
He explained, “Whereas Cruella De Vil at $87 million is looking at currently, negative $97 million and a best case scenario ending at negative $45 million; worst case scenario negative $75 million.”
“So, either way a financial loss for Disney at least based on these raw numbers. This does not take into account any Disney+ purchases. This also did not take into account any other revenue streams,” he adds.
