DC Studios’ release schedule in 2025 just became smaller – about as small and rarified as this year which only boasts Joker: Folie a Deux. Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman has been pushed back, much like its predecessor.

According to Deadline’s sources, The Batman – Part II is moving from October 3rd, 2025, to Oct. 2nd, 2026. This move is said to be because of the strikes that took place over the summer and put a stop to productions across the board.

The news comes with an initial shock value but wasn’t without an augur as Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon in the film series, said he hadn’t seen the script. His remarks are a serious indication that the movie is behind schedule and that it might not even have a finished screenplay.

The silver lining is Part II will now have some breathing room between it and the James Gunn reboot formerly known as Superman: Legacy. The Batman 2 can stand on its own away from the shadow of the studio head and his Man of Steel movie and may become a lone tentpole for 2026.

Superman kicks off the “Gods and Monsters” phase of Gunn’s new DC Universe which will have its own Batman. That part hasn’t been cast but will likely be introduced in The Brave and The Bold, a film IT and The Flash director Andy Muschietti is attached to.

Reeves is building his own mini-universe around his characters in Gotham. That continuum will mature further when The Penguin starring Colin Farrell premieres this year – as far as anyone knows – on Max. More villain-centric series and films are rumored but unconfirmed.

A developing Arkham series was rebranded as part of the mainline DCU, but there is no sign yet that the trend is to swallow up the rest of Reeves’ Bat-verse.

The Batman – Part II’s former 2025 slot is being taken by Dark Knight vet Maggie Gyllenhaal and her Frankenstein-inspired film The Bride! – starring her DK co-star Christian Bale and her husband/The Batman actor Peter Sarsgaard.
