Amazing Spider-Man Artist Stuart Immonen Clarifies Retirement Story
Inker Wade von Grawbadger, who has worked with artist Stuart Immonen since 1993 took to Facebook to report that Immonen had retired from the comic book industry.
Wade von Grawbadger would write:
“Spider-man 800, the final installment of the Go Down Swinging! story line, is out today and it’s a day of seriously mixed emotions. Very proud of the book and I had a blast on every page but it also marks the end of an era. Stuart retired after finishing this issue. It’s possible he may return for a small thing here or there but he was more than ready to move on to other challenges and opportunities.”
He added:
“It’s been a long, wild ride(over 20 years!) Mr Immonen and I am a better artist and man for having worked with you.”
However, Immonen would speak directly with Newsarama to clarify Wade von Grawbadger’s comments.
Immonen explained:
“My exclusive agreement with Marvel wound down some time ago. Everyone involved is happily still on good terms. As to the rest, I have no immediate plans; if the right project with the right collaborators came along, I would of course consider it. For the moment however, Kathryn and I are enthusiastically devoting our time and energy to non-work matters.”
Immonen began his comics career in 1988 when he self-published his first work called Playground. He would go on to work for a number of smaller publishers before being hired by DC Comics in 1993 where he worked on Action Comics, Adventures of Superman, and others. He would also do work for Marvel including Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E., and The New Avengers.
More recently Immonen worked on Star Wars and Amazing Spider-Man as well as his creator owned series, Empress, with Mark Millar. Empress was actually optioned for film with producers Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum working with Millar to bring the work to the big screen. The latest report on the progress of the film saw F. Scott Frazier, the writer on xXX: The Return of Xander Cage, working on an Empress script.
