Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham’s upcoming Fast and Furious spin-off is about to hit theaters, and we’ve got Universal’s box office expectations for the film.
My source tells me that Universal expects Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw to earn $65 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office and go on to earn $170 million in total.
The expectations are a little low compared to Box Office Pro’s long range prediction from June. They predicted the film would earn between $75 million and $115 million in its opening weekend.
The expectations are also quite low for a Fast and Furious film. If the film hits Universal’s expectations it would only be the sixth largest opening weekend in the franchise’s history. It would only gross more than 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
As for total domestic gross, if this expectation is met, the film would only be the fifth highest grossing film in the franchise. The highest grossing film is Furious 7. It opened to a monster $147.1 million opening weekend and would go on to gross $353 million at the domestic box office. The most recent film in the franchise, The Fate of the Furious is currently the third highest grossing film in the franchise with a total haul of $226 million and an opening weekend of $98.7 million.
I have an inkling that Box Office Pro’s long range prediction might be more in line than Universal’s expectations, but we will see.
My source also confirmed that the film will be 136 minutes long and will be rated PG-13. Early shows for Hobbs & Shaw begin on Thursday, August 1 at 7:00 pm.
Hobbs & Shaw is directed by David Leitch. The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, Helen Mirren, and Eiza González.
