Jared Leto’s Joker to Get His Own Movie!
Joke’s On You
Jared Leto‘s Joker was barely in 2016’s Suicide Squad. It was more like an over-sized cameo. The actor’s performance was hit-or-miss with the fans. But it was enough evidence for his Joker to get a second chance. And that’s exactly what’s going to happen as Jared Leto’s Joker is expected to feature in his very own film.
Variety not only reports that Leto’s Joker will get a standalone film, but it’s possible there will be even more spin-offs from David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad.
“Sources tell Variety that Leto is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from “Suicide Squad.”
Plot details are currently unknown, but the studio’s idea is to expand on the world created by “Suicide Squad” and tie into future installments of that property. Warner Bros. already announced that Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn would be getting her own movie with a “Birds of Prey” feature, and the next goal was setting up a film for Leto’s Joker.”
The future of DC Films isn’t clear just yet, but San Diego Comic Con is right around the corner. Jared Leto’s film could be one of many announced at the Convention.
But what of that other Joker film? The one starring Joaquin Phoenix is still getting made. Expect DC Films and Warner Bros. to start to differentiate between certain DC projects. They’re going to announce a new brand of films that includes Todd Philips and Martin Scorcese’s Joker film and possibly some other DC standalone’s. An exciting prospect.
What’s more exciting is Jared Leto gets the chance to show DC Fans what his Joker is really made of. According to Variety, he and DC are currently in search of a writer to get things started.
“Oh, I’m not going to kill ya. I’m just gonna hurt ya. Really, really bad.”
That line delivery may be Leto’s best work as the Joker. Given in the first Sizzle Reel shown for Suicide Squad. As many know, the trailers for the film ended up being far more entertaining than the final product. Will Smith’s Deadshot, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn… Each and every one of those performances was more satisfying than the film in which they starred. But what of Jared Leto’s Joker? A lot of fans weren’t fans of the performance. The character’s scenes were odd and off-putting, not enough to convince the most scrutinizing of fans. His behind-the-scenes antics sometimes drawing more attention than the performance itself.
It’s hard to give his performance the time of day when Suicide Squad didn’t really give the character the time of day. As David Ayer later lamented, The Joker should have been the villain of the film. One of many missed opportunities. Here’s the second chance that his Joker deserves. Will they change the tattoos and grill? Is he still going to sport purple leather and Lamborghini’s? Only Jared Leto and a few executives know, as of right now.
The DC Extended Universe is in a kind of a limbo at the moment. But don’t assume they’re just going to throw the last five years of work by the wayside. Not every character or actor that had a divisive reaction is going to be replaced. Every single one deserves a chance. None more so than Jared Leto’s Joker. Hopefully, by the time the film hits theaters he’ll have a Batman to antagonize. Fans still want to see Leto’s Joker sit across from Ben Affleck’s Batman. Maybe someday.
According to Variety, the film may go into production as early as 2019. Do you think Jared Leto’s Joker deserves his own film?
