It’s an interesting casting choice especially with Sony developing a new Masters of the Universe movie. However, before any casting decisions are made Sony is going to have find a director. Variety reports David S. Goyer was in talks with the studio, but he dropped out due to other commitments. Goyer had previously turned in a script and Sony hoped he would direct the film as well. While Goyer won’t be directing, he will still be an executive producer and screenwriter.
Sony is going to have to make some decisions quickly as they already set a release date for the Masters of the Universe film for December 18, 2019.
The film will be based on Mattel’s toyline which soared to popularity in the 1980s. It featured He-Man and the villainous Skeletor as they battled for the soul of Eternia. The toy line was boosted by the popular animated television series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe have had a storied history since the 1980s. The characters have appeared in a number of comic book series with recent series being published by DC Comics. Along with the early 80s animated television series there was also a more recent show done in 2002.
The upcoming Sony Film won’t be the first of its kind. He-Man made his big screen debut in 1987’s Masters of the Universe directed by Gary Goddard which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man.
What do you think? Could you see Channing Tatum as He-Man or do you have another actor in mind?
