Report: Aquaman Spin-off The Trench in the Works at DC

A new report indicates that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have greenlit an Aquaman spin-off, The Trench.

The Hollywood Reporter reports Warner Bros. “has hired newbie scribes Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman.”

The report indicates the movie will have a much smaller budget compared to Warner Bros. other superhero films. It also notes that the main cast from Aquaman will not be featured in the film.

Aquaman director James Wan will be attached to the project as a producer. He will be joined by Peter Safran.

The Trench were introduced into DC Comics continuity during the New 52 run. In the comics, they are  one of three surviving kingdoms following the fall of Atlantis along with Xebel and Atlantis as revealed in [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGTNB4U” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Aquaman #25[/easyazon_link].

The creatures follow the wielder of the Dead King’s Scepter, much like they followed Jason Momoa’s Aquaman after he acquired the Trident of Atlantis from the hands of the dead king Atlan.

Aquaman

While The Hollywood Reported indicated Warner Bros. is moving forward with a Trench movie, they note there aren’t any serious discussions for “a direct sequel” to Aquaman.

I personally find it interesting they have greenlit a horror-based Trench film that won’t star any of the main cast of Aquaman. One has to wonder what comics-based characters, if any, will be featured in the film. What is the draw of the film other than the idea that it’s a horror film set in the DC Universe?

I also have to question what would separate this Trench film from say Vin Diesel’s [easyazon_link identifier=”B001BRAUYM” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Pitch Black[/easyazon_link]. The Trench operate in the same fashion as they fear and are possibly even injured by light.

If I was making a film about The Trench, it would probably be more of an origin type-film showing how the creatures transformed and descended into their current forms after the fall of Atlantis. It would be similar to a zombie film, where some individuals transforms first and begin attacking their own family members.

What do you make of DC pursuing a film based on the Trench? Are you interested in seeing a film about The Trench?
