Report: Scottish Actor Alex Ferns Lands Undisclosed Role in The Batman – Could Be Cast as Gotham Police Commissioner

Alex Ferns, a Scotsman known for his roles in Chernobyl and Brit soap Eastenders, is joining the cast of The Batman in a reportedly critical part.

The Scottish Sun first reported Ferns “landed a major role” in the Matt Reeves picture but didn’t specify what. IMDb lists him as portraying Commissioner Pete Savage.

ComicBookMovie.com says Savage is an original character and states further being the Commissioner of Gotham PD means Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) is not. This hints at a potential plot point.

The Batman is believed to be a “starting-out version” of Batman, as Ben Affleck often described it. Active, but younger, with a rogues gallery firmly in place, Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) will find his wings and cultivate his detective prowess.

Gordon could also rise through the ranks of the police department, similar to Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight. That doesn’t bode well for Commissioner Savage, of course.

The Sun got in touch with a “movie insider” who offered the following about Alex Ferns:

“Alex was tremendous in Chernobyl and he’s one of the best actors out there.

It should come as no surprise that he’s starting to land some major roles in major movies.

The Batman will be the talk of Tinseltown and Alex deserves to be thrust into that conversation.

Anybody who knows him will tell you this kind of role is well deserved and a long time coming.”

Ferns won a Scottish BAFTA for playing miner leader Andrei Glukhov in Chernobyl – a series that aired on WarnerMedia-owned premium channel HBO.

His Chernobyl costar Con O’Neill was also announced as a member of Gotham’s police force, Chief Mackenzie Bock, a comic character that was a key figure during the 1999 storyline No Man’s Land. Nicknamed “Hardback,” Bock was head of the Organized Crime Control Bureau (OCCB).

Organized crime will have a face in The Batman in the form of John Turturro who plays Carmine Falcone. The cast also includes Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, and Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
