Robert Downey Jr. Opens Up about Iron Man’s Relationship with Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War

attends the premiere of Columbia Pictures' "Spider-Man: Homecoming" at TCL Chinese Theatre on June 28, 2017 in Hollywood, California.

Roberty Downey Jr.  has embodied Tony Stark aka Iron Man since he kick-started the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man in 2008. He recently sat down to do an interview with Empire Magazine about Iron Man’s future and his relationship with Steve Rogers in Avengers: Infinity War.

One of the biggest things to happen following Captain America: Civil War was a major rift between Captain America and Iron Man. As the two finished beating each other to a pulp, Iron Man told Captain America he didn’t deserve the shield. In response Captain America drops it and leaves Tony behind. Cap would try to make amends by sending Tony a letter and apologizing for why he kept Bucky’s secret from him and that he wished they agreed on the Sokovia Accords. He told Tony if he ever needed him he would be there. He even sent him a phone in order to contact him.

Robert Downey Jr. hinted at how Tony would deal with Captain America:

“To me the big question is could he ever in clear conscience pick up that flip phone Cap sent him at the end of Civil War. That is really it. For me I think back to Obidiah and that deception, and it’s one of those things It’s why Steve Perry never went back to Journey.”

With that, the question one might ask is will the pair share much screen time? Robert Downey Jr. had a simple answer, “I don’t know.” He would also elaborate that when he does see Captain America his first instinct would be to “bust his jaw.”

“I feel like my instinct would be to bust his jaw. All I know is that there’s something about being on camera with Evans. I hate to say it, but I don’t know what I’m gonna do when he’s not Cap anymore. I look at him and think this is the truest, most down moral psychology I’ve ever seen and then they go, ‘Cut!’ and Chris is like, ‘Hey buddy, I gotta get out of here.’ I’m like, ‘You wanna go to dinner?’ ‘Nope.’ ‘Okay! Love you! Love you, Cap! I mean, Chris!'”

As for what Robert Downey Jr. might do after he is down with Iron Man, he had some things to say about that too.

“You know what, I’ve learned a lot from the missus. You know how what or how you’re gonna end until it is. That takes a lot of the edge off. She’s learned how to be like, ‘You won’t know until you’re there so you’re wasting your time on that equation. That’s not on the test.'”

Looks like there is some hope that he hasn’t made a clear decision yet. But he looks ready for a good end:

“I could project all kinds of stuff. I could get into the black dog. Whatever you want. Or I could stay, spiking it in the end zone until I have to be carried off. I’m looking forward to whatever resolution is in the cards.”

The tension combined with the threat of Thanos’s incoming assault for the Infinity Stones will only heighten unease with the characters. Avengers: Infinity War opens up April 27th, 2018.
