Rumor: Power Rangers and Transformers Combined Film Universe in the Works
A new rumor indicates a rebooted version of a live-action Power Rangers movie could exist within the same film universe as The Transformers.
The rumor comes from Mikey Sutton and his Geekosity Facebook group.
Sutton writes:
“Hasbro still has dreams of weaving together its properties into a single, cohesive cinematic universe, and they would love for the Power Rangers to be a significant part of it. According to insiders I spoke to, there are talks of the Power Rangers co-existing in the same universe as the Transformers.”
However, Sutton makes it clear this would not be the current film universe of Transformers from Michael Bay.
“No, this wouldn’t be Michael Bay’s Transformers but the post-Bumblebee vision.”
Not only does Sutton state Hasbro is looking to include the Power Rangers and Transformers into one film universe, but he also indicates they could also work in ROM and the Micronauts.
“A Power Rangers/Transformers film could certainly ignite the franchise, if done correctly. Then add ROM and the Micronauts to the mix, and you have the ultimate geek fest. But it all depends on Hasbro and Paramount Pictures, what their creative teams can conjure up.”
A Power Rangers and Transformers film universe is certainly possible. Hasbro recently acquired the Power Rangers from SABAN in a multimillion dollar deal. (Related: Hasbro Acquires Saban’s Power Rangers in Mega Deal)
The concept isn’t out of the ordinary either. Hasbro teamed up with IDW to launch a major crossover event titled Revolution with a number of their brands that included the Transformers, G.I. JOE, Micronauts, ROM, Action Man, and M.A.S.K. Mobile Armored Strike Kommand. (Related: IDW Unveils Massive Hasbro Crossover Event)
Michael Kelly the head of Publishing at Hasbro described the crossover at the time:
“We’ve done plenty of crossovers in the past, but nothing near this scope or scale. Our heroes, whether they are from Earth or from distant reaches of the galaxy, all have one thing in common: their powers and abilities are based primarily on technology. We have been able to use this fact to build a natural and believable link between all of these disparate characters. The result is a complex and dynamic world where all manner of conflicts and team-ups can and will exist. If you are a fan of Hasbro’s brands, your time is now.”
Hasbro didn’t own Power Rangers back then. They do now. In fact, last year Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner confirmed they had given the green light to develop a Power Rangers sequel film. Goldner stated, “Hasbro will work with a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release.” (Related: Hasbro Greenlights Power Rangers Sequel)
It’s quite possible their plans have changed and they might reboot Power Rangers in the new Transformers continuity. Or the sequel could have a stinger scene teasing the Transformers and Cybertron. Who knows maybe they tease both properties in the upcoming Snake Eyes film. (Related: Inverse Praises Snake Eyes Retcon by Casting Henry Golding in Upcoming G.I. JOE Film)
What do you make of this rumor? Do you want to see a Power Rangers and Transformers crossover film universe? What about G.I. JOE or Micronauts getting in on the action as well?
