Rumor: Rian Johnson’s New Star Wars Trilogy Scrapped
A new rumor indicates that Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy might never happen.
The three announced dates for the upcoming Star Wars films are NOT for Rian Johnson according to John Campea relying on information from an inside source with knowledge of the situation.
Those three announced films are for Game of Thrones producers and writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ upcoming Star Wars movies.
Campea indicates a source tells him, “The Star Wars dates 2022, 2024, and 2026 are in fact all Benioff and Weiss movies. That they do not have anything on the schedule for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars films. And according to this particular source, Rian Johnson’s thing as basically done.”
He does add, “He may be consulting with Benioff and Weiss with their trilogy, but his thing was off.”
Campea then indicates he checked with another source who confirmed that the 2022, 2024, and 2026 dates are all Benioff and Weiss movies.
New Star Wars Movies
Disney recently announced a whole set of dates for upcoming films, going all the way to 2027 with Avatar 5. Of the supposed six new Star Wars movies that come after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, only three are listed in the movie master plan. These movies are dated for pre-Christmas weekend of 2022, 2024, and 2026. They are only noted as ‘Untitled’ leaving no clues to who is directing or which trilogy they are a part of.
Previously it had been announced that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was writing a new trilogy as well as Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss with their own set of movies.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, stated, “We’re not just looking at what the next three movies might be, or talking about this in terms of a trilogy. We’re looking at: what is the next decade of storytelling?” She would confirm Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be working on the future of Star Wars adding, “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars. They’re working very closely with Rian.”
Rumors of Exit
Earlier this year, rumors began floating around saying Rian Johnson would no longer be attached to his projected movie series. Website Super Bro Movies originally published the rumor, which was soon jumped upon. ScreenRant quoted “multiple sources” that Johnson was no longer involved. Johnson took to Twitter to debunk these rumors which then began to cool.
But with Campea’s new video, where is the truth? Has Johnson left his new project? Audiences are divided on his past movie, The Last Jedi. At the time of drafting this article, the movie sits at a 44% audience score. For reference, The Force Awakens has an audience score of 87%.
These dated movies come after a three years hiatus following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, directed by J.J. Abrams
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releases in theaters December 20, 2019.
