The Avengers Writer Teases The Matrix Extended Universe!
Over the last few months, there have been some rumors of a potential Matrix reboot. However, we haven’t really seen any actual headway into bringing the Wachowskis’ Matrix universe back from the dead.
It appears there has been headway, but it’s not a reboot. Screenwriter Writer Zak Penn, known for movies such as X-Men: The Last Stand and Suspect Zero, a personal favorite, as well as The Avengers just might have given us our best hope for an expanded universe. In a conversation with ScreenRant. Zak Peen talked about a revival of The Matrix; not a reboot.
“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in…a phase right now. That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too.”
He went on to compare Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Ready Player One and the OASIS featured in the film to The Matrix.
“I will fight people who don’t under…look, I think OASIS (the interconnected virtual space in Ready Player One) is similar, both the Matrix and OASIS are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes. And they are not, you know, when it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, they’re going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, the Matrix is still one of my favorite…they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.”
He continued:
I was at the premiere and I was still like, this was better than I ever expected. So I just think that universe is brilliant, I think OASIS is like the action-comedy version of that and it doesn’t always have to be the same characters, you could go in so many different directions so…
I love how he tied the two together like that. We know next year it will be The Matrix’s 20th anniversary since it first hit the big screen all the way back in 1999. The Matrix opened society’s eyes about technology and where we’re going with it. Many of the themes have increasingly become more important over the years such as A.I. and online communities.
I believe now would be an amazing time to not only revisit the sacred Earth and Zion, but to expand The Matrix even more to ask the important questions that society is soon to be facing. They could also tell different stories in The Matrix world. You could have a Zion-focused movie. Or even one that just takes place within The Matrix.
What do you think? Should The Matrix universe be expanded? And if so, would you want to see the Wachowskis back on board and in charge? Tell us in the comments below!
