The Flash Movie Gets Delayed Again
A new report indicates The Flash movie can’t outrun its problems and that it will once again be delayed.
In a new report by Variety, the Scarlet Speedster won’t be heading to the big screen in his own film any time soon. The sticking point appears to be the script as Variety indicates it is still being worked on.
The film was expected to begin production in March, but Warner Bros. never officially greenlit the film. And it doesn’t appear they would have been able to make the necessary changes to the script in time for that expected March production date.
With the film not being ready to move into production in March, that means the film, if it ever does get the greenlight, won’t appear in theaters until 2021.
The reason being is that Ezra Miller, the actor who plays Barry Allen, plays a key part in the Harry Potter spin-off series Fantastic Beasts, and while The Crimes of Grindelwald debuts this winter, the third entry into the series is expected to begin shooting next July. That means Miller probably won’t be available until Fall 2019 or later.
But what happens now since the March schedule is off the table? Well, a lot. The reason being is that Ezra Miller, The Flash, is set to play roles in other projects. Such as the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts movies. Which has a shooting schedule of next July. Which means that if they begin production of that movie in July.
The film is still supposed to be directed by [easyazon_link identifier=”B073HJTTQ2″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Spider-Man: Homecoming[/easyazon_link] scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. However, they aren’t the first directors to be attached to the film. They actually replaced Dope director Rick Famuyiwa, who left the project over creative differences.
It’s unclear what the script for this Flash movie will be, but early rumors indicated that it could adapt Geoff Johns’ Flashpoint storyline.
It’s possible that Warner Bros. might not have that much faith in the direction the directing pair might be taking the script. The Flash film might find itself in the same production limbo that the Gambit film finds itself in.
Warner Bros. and DC Films do appear to be in flux following Justice League. While they have Aquaman, Shazam!, and Wonder Woman 1984 on the docket, there are a number of reports that they won’t be pursuing films with Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. It’s possible they might completely reboot their DC Extended Universe keeping only Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
In fact, Warner Bros. confirmed James Gunn would be writing a new Suicide Squad. While Gunn was confirmed as a writer, reports indicated he might be rebooting the franchise with a completely different and new take. This comes off the back of a Harley Quinn-centric Birds of Prey film making a number of casting announcements.
It’s hard to say what exactly Warner Bros. and DC Films are up to, but they definitely have a lot going on. Whether or not any of these films will actually be connected any more Warner Bros. has yet to reveal. My guess is they will focus more on individual stories rather than pushing a connected universe as they did with Justice League.
Do you think the Scarlet Speedster is in development limbo? Do you want to see a Flash solo film with Ezra Miller?
