Amazon to Adapt ‘The Walking Dead’ Creator Robert Kirkman’s Invincible Comics!

Invincible

It’s been almost a year since The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman left AMC to join Amazon Studios and he’s got his first series with the streaming service lined up. Kirkman and Amazon Studios will team up to adapt Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible comics into an animated series.

The Hollywood Reporter indicates “Amazon Studios has handed out a straight-to-series order for an hourlong animated take on Invincible.”

The first season will be eight episodes long and will be geared towards an adult audience.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the series Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley and I did together for over 15 years. To know our characters will live on in multiple iterations in other media is almost too exciting to bear! What Amazon is allowing us to do in animated form is nothing short of ground-breaking, and I can’t wait for our rabid fan base to experience it!” Kirkman said.

Invincible also known as Mark Grayson first appeared in Image Comics’ Tech Jacket #1 in 2002 before getting his own title in 2003. He’s the teenage son of an extraterrestrial superhero known as Omni-Man. At the age of 17, Mark’s powers manifest and he obtains great strength, speed, flight, some invulnerability, and an extremely powerful healing factor. The series is extremely violent as Invincible fights to defend Earth from a number of threats including cyborgs, evil teachers, and invading aliens.

Amazon Studios’ head of scripted genre programming Sharon Yguado expressed her excitement about the project:

“Robert has an uncanny talent to predict the zeitgeist, and we are incredibly excited to see him break boundaries in an animated one-hour format. In a world saturated with superhero fare, we trust Robert to subvert expectations while encapsulating a story filled with heart and adrenaline. We love his ambitious plan for the show and believe it will look like nothing else on television.”

Invincible joins The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and Outcast as comic book properties adapted from Kirkman’s comics.

While Amazon Studios work to adapt Invincible, there is still a feature film in development at Universal with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached to write, direct, and produce.
