Anthony Mackie On Disney+ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Series: “I’m Not Captain America”
At Disney’s D23 Expo, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie bluntly stated, “I’m Not Captain America” after he was asked why the show didn’t have Captain America in the title.
After a good laugh when the reporter indicates they are confused, Mackie doubled down stating, “That’s the tease. I’m not Captain America. Just because he told me to hold his shield. He didn’t say you’re Captain America now.” Mackie added, “I’m going to go back to see my girl. Call me if something happens. I don’t want to carry this dumb shield.”
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier writer Malcolm Spellman added, “I would not make any assumptions based on Endgame. You know how Marvel is. We can’t say much about that, but it’s not predictable.” He added, “Where you think Endgame obviously ends that target is going to move around.”
Mackie would also speak to Variety about the show. He described it as “Very serious, very dramatic.” Mackie explained the relationship between Falcon and the Winter Soldier comparing them to Archie Bunker and George Jefferson. Mackie would reiterate to Variety that he is not Captain America, “I am the Falcon. I will always be the Falcon. The moniker will stay the same.”
D23 and the lack of Sam and the Mack
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier didn’t have a big moment during the Disney+ panel on Friday. The only big reveal was John Walker/U.S. Agent being introduced, played by Wyatt Russel. He will join Daniel Bruhl who will reprise his role as Baron Zemo from Captain America: Civil War as well as Emily VanCamp who returns as Sharon Carter. Bruhl did not appear on stage Friday for the panel. (Related: Helmut Zemo Actor Daniel Brühl Provides First Look of Masked Baron Zemo…Kinda)
Sebastian Stan described the show back in May, “I think it’s gonna be a lot of dealing with Anthony’s character and Anthony himself which is always another character.”
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is getting a slow burn from Marvel Studios and Disney+. We didn’t get any footage of the show. The only thing we’ve gotten so far is a reveal of the poster, which shows Falcon and Winter Soldier in new garb.
