New Conan the Barbarian TV Series Announced!
Anyone ready for some Conan the Barbarian action? The mega-action franchise based off the books by Robert E. Howard will be adapted into a television series in the near future. This news just comes a few weeks after Marvel Comics reacquired the license to publish Conan comics again.
A report by Deadline notes this new Conan the Barbarian series will be developed by Amazon and will simply be called Conan.
Behind the project are some well-known television developers including Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, and The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo executive producer Warren Littlefield.
Creator Ryan Condal will retell the classic Conan story with a focus on his literary origins. Conan was driven out of his homeland and forced to wander the mysterious and treacherous world of the Hyborian Age. While he wanders, he seeks purpose in the world that rejects him as a “mindless savage.”
Condal will act as Executive Producer alongside Littlefield and Sapochnik. They will be joined by Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler under Pathfinder Media.
The new Conan series is part of Amazon’s push into the fantasy genre. They recently announced a Lord of the Rings television series.
Conan the Barbarian is probably best remembered being played by Arnold Schwarzenegger decades ago. Schwarzenegger starred in both Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer in the early 1980s. However, the franchise also features two animated series and a very short-lived syndicated action show called Conan the Adventurer. You might also remember the latest film reboot Conan the Barbarian which starred Aquaman’s Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, and Rose McGowan.
The character of Conan the Barbarian was first created by Robert E. Howard in 1932. The series was published in Weird Tales magazine. For H.P. Lovecraft fans, this is also the same magazine which printed some of his early work in the 1920s.
At the moment the series does not have a filming date or release date. It’s safe to say that this project is at the earliest of stages. With Conan now under it’s banner, what other epic fantasy franchises could Amazon look to bring in? Terry Brooks’ Sword of Shannara saw its live-action adaptation fizzle out on MTV after two seasons and lasted only one season on Spike. I doubt Amazon would look at that one. However, they could go after Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.
