New Star Trek: Picard Details Revealed At Destination Star Trek Birmingham

The three-day Destination Star Trek Birmingham event unveiled a few new details about CBS All Access’s upcoming Star Trek: Picard series.

Star Trek: Picard is arguably both one of the most anticipated shows of 2020 and one that has Trek fans on the edge of their seats since it was announced.

During the event, CBS All Access revealed Jean-Luc Picard’s new admiral outfit. You can see that below.

Not only did they reveal the new suit, but some of the cast took to the stage to talk about the show.

Lt. Commander Data

According to Trek Movie, Data actor Brent Spiner got his only solo session and revealed that the Data revealed in the New York Comic Con trailer will not be the Data seen in the actual show.

Trek Movie reports:

“Spiner confirmed what many had assumed: The Data we’ve seen in the Picard trailer is not representative of what he’s going to look like in the show. They didn’t have time to make post-production tweaks in time for NYCC.”

This is welcomed news to I and others who pointed out how both the makeup and de-aging special effects looked off for Spiner’s character. The footage from the trailer made the android looking odd, bloated, and just off.

Jean-Luc Picard

Brent Spiner was not the only to take the stage. Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Jean-Luc Picard also took to the stage.

Stewart revealed that the show will most definitely explore the Borg. He stated, “You will learn a lot more about the Borg.”

For many, the Borg represent a kind of ultimate evil, or anti-federation, with the hive mind’s disregard for personal liberty and rights.

Stewart’s comments follow-up on the trailer footage, which showed a damaged Borg cube, what looked liked drones, and the addition of two actors closely associated with the race.

Both Jeri Ryan, the former Borg member Seven of Nine from Star Trek Voyager and Jonathan Del Arco, who played Hugh the Borg in The Next Generation’s I, Borg season five episode appeared in the trailer.

We can expect the Borg to play a major role in the storyline.

Stewart also discussed how he returned to his role as Jean-Luc Picard for the series. The legendary actor pointed to his role in the X-Men film Logan and noted he wanted Picard to provide a fresh take on Star Trek much like Logan provided a different take on previous X-Men films.

Patrick Stewart also confirmed that the show was going to stay in canon when it comes to Jean-Luc Picard’s age. Based on the timeline established in The Next Generation, Picard would now be in his nineties, quite a bit older than the actor’s current 79.

Stewart also revealed that the footage of William Riker and Deanna Troi seen in the trailer comes from a specific episode focused on Riker.

And they might not be the only The Next Generation crew members joining the show. Stewart told fans, “Will we see the rest of the group? I think so.”

He also had hope that the show might potentially explore the hot and cold relationship between Picard and Beverly Crusher played by Gates McFadden.

When asked by a fan about exploring the relationship, Stewart responded, “It would be great to find a way to bring her in.”

Stewart did confirm the show will not be suitable for children. He stated, “No, there’s some adult language and subject matter that’s intense.”

This is a pretty big departure from the TNG era which, though dealt with very intense topics, still, for the most part, kept everything family-friendly.

What do you think of all of this information? Does it answer some burning questions related to Star Trek: Picard? And does it give you a bit of hope for the show?

Star Trek: Picard is expected to go live on January 23rd, 2020.
