The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to Deal with Reactions to Black Captain America
Marvel Studios and Disney+’s upcoming show The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will deal with reactions to a black Captain America.
As reported by We Got This Covered, writer Derek Kolstad took over the Discussing Film twitter and answered a fan question confirming the show would deal with reactions to a black Captain America.
Cosmic Book News reports the fan asked, “I am so happy to have Sam Wilson as Captain America. Will reactions to a black Captain America be explored? Will Sam’s feelings about Steve going back to an era when the two of them would not have been able to go into the same diner be given any space?”
Kolstad responded in a now-deleted tweet writing, “Oh, yeah. And then some.”
This is rather interesting news given actor Anthony Mackie, who plays The Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, repeatedly told the press at Disney’s D23 that he would not be Captain America. He told IGN “I’m not Captain America.” In fact, Mackie stated that Sam Wilson would not “want to carry this dumb shield.” (Related: Anthony Mackie On Disney+ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Series: “I’m Not Captain America”)
Mackie would reiterate that Sam Wilson wasn’t Captain America to Variety. He told them, “I am the Falcon. I will always be the Falcon. The moniker will stay the same.”
Kolstad’s fellow writer Malcolm Spellman also hinted that Sam Wilson would not be Captain America. He stated, “Where you think Endgame obviously ends that target is going to move around.”
Avengers: Endgame ended with Steve Rogers handing his shield to Sam Wilson after he returned from a time traveling mission where he was supposed to return the Infinity Stones alongside Mjolnir. While it appears he returned the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir, he returns with a fully restored shield (Thanos had destroyed the original one) and has significantly aged to where he is now an old man. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
The Disney+ show will see the return of Daniel Bruhl as Helmut Zemo. It definitely appears he will take on the role of Baron Zemo as the actor showed off a photo of him wearing the villain’s iconic purple mask. (Related: Helmut Zemo Actor Daniel Brühl Provides First Look of Masked Baron Zemo…Kinda)
Also returning is Emily VanCamp. She will reprise her role as Sharon Carter. Bruhl and VanCamp will be joined by Wyatt Russel who will play John Walker aka U.S. Agent.
What do you make of Kolstad indicating the show will focus on the reactions to a black Captain America while Mackie stated he won’t be Captain America?
