Fast & The Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez issued an apology after she defended her [easyazon_link identifier=”B07HSK38SR” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Widows[/easyazon_link] co-star Liam Neeson. Neeson is accused of racism following a controversial interview, where he detailed his primal urge for revenge after his friend told him she had been brutally raped by a black man.
Rodriguez would take to Twitter to apologize for how she defended Liam Neeson. She would write:
“To my friends and colleagues and my fans and community: I want to deeply apologize for my recent choice of words and poor use of example. In a pressure-filled situation, I defended a friend in the wrong way. I now realize how insensitive it was, and I had no intention of invoking such a terrible historical comparison. I have learned from this, and will grow from it. One Love, MRod.”

Rodriguez vociferously defended Liam Neeson while she attended the amfAR Gala in New York last Wednesday. She spoke to Vanity Fair:
“Dude, have you watched Widows? His tongue was so far down Viola Davis’s throat. You can’t call him a racist ever. Racists don’t make out with the race that they hate, especially in the way he does with his tongue—so deep down her throat. I don’t care how good of an actor you are. It’s all bullshit. Ignore it. He’s not a racist. He’s a loving man. It’s all lies.”
Neeson acknowledged his actions were wrong in the interview stating, ““It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that. And I’ve never admitted that, and I’m saying it to a journalist. God forbid.” He would add, “It’s awful. But I did learn a lesson from it, when I eventually thought, ‘What the f*** are you doing,’ you know?”
Neeson was promoting his upcoming film Cold Pursuit and describing how he channels the primal need for revenge. Lionsgate cancelled the premiere for the film and Neeson canceled an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Following the interview, there were calls to cancel the actor, and some people want to digitally remove Neeson from the upcoming Men in Black: International movie.
Cold Pursuit grossed $10.8 million in its opening weekend behind The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and What Men Want.
What do you make of Rodriguez’s apology? Do you think she needed to apologize?
