Superheroes Inspire Good Deeds Outside of the Books
In the stories we know and love, superheroes save the day. They save hostages from evil villains, they rescue cats stuck in trees, they prevent global terror plots and so on.
In West Orange, New Jersey comic books are also helping to save real people who require hospice care. The Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center has been organizing the “Superheroes for Hospice” Charity Comic Book Sale for six years now.
Their latest annual “Superheroes for Hospice” event took place two weeks ago on November 7th where thousands of comic books, graphic novels, and collectibles were available for purchase from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and more.
The event also featured a number of special guests including Neil Vokes, Paul Castiglia, Paris Cullins, Darrell Goza, Thomas Hall, Vincent Delvecchio Jr., Marc Heyhoe, David E. McClain, and Tom Schloendorn.
Volunteer Coordinator Spiro Ballas talked about how much the event has helped the Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center, “We first got the idea in 2008, and we’ve raised $120,000 over the years. Our objective this year is to raise $14,000.”
According to Josh Baker of TAP into West Orange, the Center “has served more than 52,000 patients and their families during one of the most personal times of their lives.”
Comic book aficionado Nile Marks commented on the benefits of the annual charity sale, “This sale is a win-win situation. We get to buy exciting and intense comic books about our favorite superheroes, and in doing, we’re helping hundreds of sick people in need.”
