Creative Assembly is reportedly working on three new Total War games, including one based on the Star Wars universe.

Citing “a reliable source,” the report comes via Dual Shockers, who claims their contact reveals developer Creative Assembly is working on three new Total War games. “As of October of 2023,” the outlet notes, the second of the three reported titles is based on the Star Wars franchise.

Based on the series’ naming structure, the tentative title would likely be Total War: Star Wars, though this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Dual Shockers also speculates that as the Total War series has yearly mainline releases since 2015 — baring 2021 — we may see the purported new Star Wars game soon. Considering Total War: Pharaoh launched in October 2023, and presuming all other information being correct, we may see Total War: Star Wars in 2025.

Insider Gaming owner Tom Henderson, who has frequently reported on insider gaming news, had details to add. Though citing “second-hand sources,” Henderson reports that he had heard claims of a “futuristic” Total War game back in late 2022, followed by several sources claiming it would be based on Star Wars.

“So, in my opinion, at least, the rumor has a lot of credence and is likely real,” Henderson concludes. This in turn lends credence to Dual Shocker’s report.

Recent activity with Creative Assembly and parent company Sega further supports the report, and brings a mix of concern and hope with how future Total War games could turn out.

In March 2023, Creative Assembly opened their third studio, Creative Assembly North, promising they were working on an unannounced project that would “give players an unforgettable experience.” The studio is also part of the “continuous improvement team,” who help enhance the other studios’ development.

However, September of that year also saw the cancellation of Creative Assembly’s Hyenas, which in turn led to layoffs. “Creative Assembly continues to have multiple projects in development with Total War and a new unannounced project,” Sega told IGN at the time.

Despite this, Creative Assembly later announced in December that they would make amends for then-recent DLC for Total War games being overpriced for what was on offer.

They promised an update to the Total Warhammer 3 DLC “Shadows of Change” to add more content, along with increasing the scope of upcoming DLC “Thrones of Decay.” They also reduced the cost of Total War: Pharaoh, partly refunded those who bought the game at its original, higher price, and would include the first DLC as a free update.
