The Rock’s fate on if he will star as Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam! movie is now official.

DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns while speaking to Yahoo about the movie stated “We haven’t announced any casting yet, but Dwayne isn’t going to be in this movie. He’s still doing Black Adam, but he won’t be in Shazam!”

I, like many fans, am pretty disappointed by the news since the internet had a field day creating unofficial promos of the film with Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. Fortunately, he will still be starring as Black Adam, but not just appearing in Shazam!.

While The Rock will not be appearing in Shazam, we did get some pretty big news about the movie! Shazam! landed long-rumored director David F. Sandberg for the project.

David is known for Lights Out, and has a feature, Annabelle: Creation, hitting theaters next month in August. One of the big gaps Sandberg will have to fill in finding a leading man. Who will he cast to play Captain Marvel? I feel that Jon Hamm has the look, but so does Patrick Warburton. I’m torn between the two. There are plenty of other casting rumors for the film, although nothing else has become official from DC on who will bring the characters to life in Shazam!.

With Justice League coming to theaters in the latter part of the year followed by a whole host of other DC films, Shazam! is going to have quite a bit of ground to cover in order to keep up with the pace.

There is still an Aquaman film slated for a 2018 debut and Cyborg is expected to be released in 2020. However, both of those films already have their leading men and will be starring in Justice League. That means if Shazam! is to keep up with its 2019 release in between those films some traction needs to take hold soon or the movie risks being delayed.

With many other films in the DCEU already ahead of Shazam! one has to wonder if there will be changes in the order of the film’s release date. And if so, how will it affect the flow of the DC Extended Universe?

Who do you want to be cast as Captain Marvel for Shazam!?
