Anyone remember Morbius? Well, I do, but my introduction to the character is thanks to the 90s cartoon series Spider-Man. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he’s the latest character from the Spider-Man universe to get his own movie. It looks like Venom isn’t the only one who’s going to have some fun.

Sony will be developing Morbius with Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama who wrote the Power Rangers movie this last year. Sharpless and Sazama wrote the script and submitted it to Sony.

Morbius the Living Vampire

Morbius for his part is Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease. His research centered around a cure for his ailment, but it came with a price. Instead of curing himself he became something else, more like a vampire than a human. With his condition, he developed super strength, fangs, and a dreaded thirst for human blood. This thirst brought him into conflict with the web-slinger on many occasions.

Morbius as a character came to life in Amazing Spider-Man #101 where he made his first appearance. The character was created by Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. Since then he’s been a part Spider-Man’s rogue gallery for decades.

With the success of this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony is dedicated to get these Spider-Man spin-off projects off the ground. It’s no surprise since their partnership with Marvel has done so well.  Though it’s still very early it’s most likely that Morbius will be outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe like the upcoming Venom movie starring Tom Hardy. Sony could be eyeing 20th Century Fox’s model with the X-Men. It would allow for a number of standalone films like Deadpool and New Mutants to operate within the same universe with little overlap.

Sony has not commented on the film. I expect Morbius to be quite a ways away from hitting theaters. Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama are currently showrunning and writing Lost in Space, a reboot of the sci-fi classic of the same name. It will air on Netflix.

Now I wonder, does this mean we can expect a Kraven movie in the future? I won’t hold my breath, but I will hold out hope.
