Anyone remember Detective Pikachu? It’s a game on the Nintendo 3Ds which sees a Pikachu take on the role of a detective. The game is being adapted into a film and will star Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals Ryan Reynolds will play the titular Pikachu Detective.

In the Nintendo 3DS game, Detective Pikachu is not as powerful as other types of Pikachu. However, he makes up for his lack of power in intelligence. This inspires the Pikachu to become a self-styled detective.

The original Pokemon game first debuted on Nintendo’s GameBoy and has spiraled into a media juggernaut with a card-collecting game, television shows, animated movies, numerous other video games, and now a live action movie. The original concept of the game put players in control of a young trainer who sets out on a quest to become the best Pokemon trainer in the world. In order to do so, he must capture and train Pokemon, unique, but powerful creatures with special powers. While he trains and captures Pokemon he also challenges the eight Pokemon Gyms before making his way to the Elite Four and battling the current Pokemon League Champion to become the best in the world.

Reynolds will be joined by Justice Smith who is also in the forthcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Also joining them is actress, Kathryn Newton, who you might recognize as Claire Novak from Supernatural.

The synopsis of the story centers around Justice Smith’s father who is kidnapped. In order to find his father, Smith’s character teams up with an unlikely ally, Detective Pikachu.  Kathryn Newton will play a sassy journalist who aids them in their journey.

Reynolds role as Pikachu is rumored to use motion-capture, similar to what we’ve seen with Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy or Gollum in the Lord of the Rings franchise. However, Legendary is keeping much of the details under lock and key. The Pokemon franchise has sold hundreds of millions of games, billions of cards, and an animated series that lasted for 20 seasons. The game recently found widespread popularity in the United States thanks to the mobile game Pokemon GO.  Many adult fans are reliving their childhoods by going out into the world and capturing wild Pokemon.

Detective Pikachu’s latest script was written by Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman. The film will be distributed by Universal outside of Japan. Toho will distribute in Japan.

No release date for Detective Pikachu has been announced, but I hope to see the movie come out in late 2019.

Ryan Reynolds, next movie to come out will be The Untitled Deadpool Sequel, which will be released on June 1, 2018.
